AUTOSHOW-Ross: small localities may see debt defaults

Billionaire investor Wilbur Ross said on Tuesday that some U.S. states may come close to debt defaults and some small localities may falter, but not to the extent that some analysts expect. "We think that some states will probably come very, very close to defaulting and therefore will terrify people and probably create buying opportunities, but we would be very surprised to see states default," Ross told Reuters in a telephone interview. "We think where there is somewhat higher probability of default is with the localities." Ross, chairman of WL Ross & Co, also said he was looking into the healthcare sector and had confidence the Irish economy could find a long-term footing after its banking crisis passes. He is part of a group competing to take over Irish building society EBS [EBSBS.UL].
