Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn mounted a $1.73 billion bid to buy Mentor Graphics Corp , days after he stepped up pressure on chip-design software maker's board seeking a sale of the company. The $17 a share offer from Icahn, who holds a 14.7 percent stake in Mentor, represents a 17 percent premium to the company's Friday closing price of $14.52. Icahn's move for Mentor comes a day after he lost out on buying power company Dynegy Inc , unable to convince shareholders to agree to his cash bid.
