CORRECTED - CWA: AT&T deal means more widespread broadband, (NYSE: T)

AT&T Inc's (T.N) $39 billion cash-and-stock transaction to buy Deutsche Telekom AG's (DTEGn.DE) T-Mobile USA will help accelerate the availability of broadband data in the United States, the head of the main U.S. telecommunications workers union said in a statement on Sunday. Larry Cohen, president of the CWA, also said the deal made sense because AT&T and T-Mobile share similar technology. "Other reported deals involving T-Mobile would have joined incompatible networks; not only would that have forced a rebuild but would have required new phones for T-Mobile customers," he said in the statement.
