CVCA-Feature-Canada's venture capital industry

Hundreds of investors descend on Vancouver this week for the annual Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association (CVCA) conference, where they will discuss strategies to attract more capital to a technology industry that gave birth to such success stories as the BlackBerry smartphone. Following are some key facts about the country's venture capital industry: * In the first quarter venture capital activity held on to moderate gains made in 2010, with total dollars invested up slightly to C$315 million ($321 million) from C$311 million in the year-before quarter. * Foreign activity accounted for close to a third of all venture-capital investment in Canada in the first quarter, with U.S. VC funds accounting for C$100 million. * Canadian venture capital funds deployed C$214 million between January and March, slightly more than in the same quarter a year earlier.
