Monsanto 3rd qtr profit down, but shares up on raised outlook, (NYSE: MON), (NYSE: TRI), (TSE: TRI.TO)

Monsanto Co reported a 6 percent drop in quarterly profit on Wednesday, but shares of the world's largest seed company rose as it raised its outlook for the year and said it planned to double earnings over the next five years. Monsanto, a developer of genetically engineered corn, soybeans and other crops and purveyor of the popular Roundup herbicide, said it had earned $858 million in the third quarter ended May 31, down from $909 million a year earlier.The profit amounted to $1.62 a share, down from $1.68 a share a year earlier, or $1.66 on an ongoing basis. Analysts expected $1.56 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.In trading before the market opened, Monsanto shares rose to $127 from Tuesday's close of $120.63.
