Kroger to purchase Harris Teeter Supermarkets in $2.5 billion deal, (NYSE: HTSI), (NYSE: KR)

Grocery store operator Kroger Co said it would acquire Harris Teeter Supermarkets Inc in a deal valued at $2.5 billion, including debt, to expand in the U.S. south east and mid-Atlantic states. Kroger offered $49.38 per share, representing a premium of about 2 percent to Harris Teeter's Monday close.

Harris Teeter Supermarkets, Inc., formerly Ruddick Corporation, operates a regional chain of supermarkets in eight states primarily in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic United States, and the District of Columbia. Shares of HTSI remained unchanged at $48.52. In the past year, the shares have traded as low as $35.25 and as high as $48.96. On average, 276887 shares of HTSI exchange hands on a given day and today's volume is recorded at 0.
